Responsible Paper Making

Paper production is closely connected to the natural environment. For this reason, Clairefontaine — the manufacturer of Rhodia paper — is committed to responsible sourcing and careful management of natural resources.

Since 1997, the Rhodia brand has been part of the Clairefontaine Group, whose long-standing expertise in paper making is matched by a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.

Sustainable Forestry

Clairefontaine primarily uses fibres derived from sawmill by-products and thinning cuts from managed forests.

This approach ensures that wood resources are used efficiently: the central parts of the tree are used for furniture and construction, while peripheral fibres are used in paper production.

Responsible forest thinning supports biodiversity, improves water management and promotes healthier forest ecosystems.

Water Management

Water is an essential element of paper production. Clairefontaine operates its own water treatment facility to ensure that water used during manufacturing is carefully purified before being returned to the natural environment.

This commitment was recognised with the Water Trophy, awarded in 1988.

Renewable and Recyclable Materials

Paper fibres are derived from plant-based resources, making paper a renewable and fully recyclable material.

Unlike products based on fossil fuels, paper production relies on resources that can be replenished through responsible forest management.

The Clairefontaine subsidiary Everbal, located near Reims in France specialises in the production of recycled paper.

Environmental Certifications

Clairefontaine supports internationally recognised certification systems that promote responsible forest management.

FSC®

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) is an international organisation dedicated to promoting environmentally responsible, socially beneficial and economically viable forest management.

PEFC™

The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) is a global system that certifies sustainably managed forests and ensures traceability of forest-based materials.

These certifications provide assurance that the wood fibres used in paper production come from responsibly managed forests.
